Walking Towards Self-Reliance: How Our Students in Acul des Pins are Crafting their Future

At École Vision Millénaire (EVMA), we have a clear mission: to provide an education that is both academic and practical. We believe that true empowerment for the youth of rural Haiti comes from combining classical studies with tangible vocational skills. https://amzn.to/4cEHSrb

Today, we are thrilled to share a window into one of our most popular technical workshops: Leatherworking and Sandal Making.

A Legacy of Craftsmanship In this workshop, our students aren’t just sitting in a classroom; they are busy hands-on, learning a trade that can provide them with immediate opportunities. The image you see here is a powerful reflection of their dedication.

You can see the progression of their work: from a raw hide of dark leather to the precise assembly of durable soles and straps. Look closely at the intricately braided cords. Our students are meticulously weaving blue, red, and pink patterns, turning simple materials into beautiful, functional footwear.

These sandals aren't just objects; they are a representation of a student’s ability to create, build, and eventually, sustain themselves.

Tools of the Trade The workshop also introduces students to essential tools, from simple hand needles to modern equipment like the red drill seen on the table. By mastering these tools, they build confidence and technical expertise, essential components of our school's PODC governance model (Planification, Organization, Direction, Control).

Why This Matters This technical training is a cornerstone of our holistic approach, designed to support the UNESCO Prize for Girls' and Women's Education 2026 criteria. We focus specifically on empowering young women in Acul des Pins, providing them with the business acumen and technical skills necessary to become economically independent.

When a student learns to make these sandals, they aren't just learning a craft—they are learning how to forge their own path.

Support Our Vision We invite you to follow their journey. Every pair of sandals represents a student who is ready to take the next step towards a better future. Stay tuned for more updates from our vocational workshops!
